A member asked:

Can malignant hyperthermia occur secondary to epidural steroid injections?

No: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome causes striking hyperthermia and is associated with potent neuroleptic drugs and Dopamine deleting agents or cessation of l-dopa or Dopamine agonists rapidly. Anticholinergic drugs such as phenothiazines or tricyclics may cause severe hyperthermia. However, epidural steroids, on their own, have never caused a hyperthermic reaction of any kind.

No.: Malignant hyperthermia is an emergency caused by the inhalational anesthetic agents with or without succinylcholine. These agents can cause sustained contraction of muscles which triggers many metabolic abnormalities which eventually lead to hyperthermia. If you wait for the temperature to rise you are already in deep trouble.
