Virus vs allergies: It's hard to know what swelling in front of your ears would be. A little lower than the temples and it could be mumps or dental issues (usually one side). Mumps is a viral infection that causes the salivary glands to swell, but cases are rare now in the us because nearly everyone is vaccinated with mmr. The other symptoms sound like allergies. Better see your doctor to rule out a serious illness.

Infection: The symptoms of cough, runny nose, headache and swelling suggest a viral infection. It's possible that the swelling in front of the ear are pre-auricular lymph nodes. Lymph nodes commonly swelling in response to an infection and may be slightly tender.
