Hormones: Your period is essentially the shedding of the uterine lining that was built up by hormones to receive a fertilized egg, (ie baby). The tenderness you are feeling is the hormones that build up the uterine lining having the same effect on building up you breast glands to be able to provide milk for that baby. If no egg is fertilized, the process stops. If you are pregnant they keep growing.
