Lithium: Major long term concerns with lithium are chronic kidney failure (uncommon), and thyroid issues, can cause low thyroid. It can interact with Motrin and nsaids, coffee, some blood pressure meds can lead to lithium toxicity and increase risk of morbidity and mortality. Needs careful clinical and lab monitoring.

Lithium benefits: Lithium can provide protection from neurodegeneration=degredation and death of nerves even associated with mood illness as well as related with aging! if the patient tolerates lithium, it can prevent episodes of mania and depression that would otherwise disrupt a person's life. Lithium has been shown to save lives.
