Attempt to repair: Chondro means cartilage, plasty means to fix. A chondoplasty is a way to attempt to repair the damaged cartilage in your knee. Actual techniques vary. In one type of chondroplasty, the area where the cartilage has been lost is derided and the underlying bone is abraded with the goal of stimulating a healing response to repair the area. This is known as an abrasion chondroplasty. Thank you.

Repair of cartilage: Chondroplasty generally refers to repair of damaged joint cartilage. There are several different techniques, including debridement/shaving of the cartilage, microfracture technique leading to cartilage growth, or other cartilage augmentation techniques including use of implantation of autologous cartilage cells or paste graft of your own cartilage into the damaged areas.

Chondroplasty is...: Cartilage is strong connective tissue that helps stabilize & cushion joints. When cartilage is damaged/ frayed due to an injury or condition, such as arthritis, the joint may become stiff or sore. A chondroplasty is an arthroscopic procedure in which the surgeon reshapes/ trims the worn cartilage of the knee to restore the naturally smooth surfaces.
