Strongly suggestive: High serotonin levels are strongly suggestive of carcinoid syndrome. Serotonin is rapidly metabolized by the liver so an intestinal carcinoid usually will not elevate the serum levels unless there is disease in the liver that releases serotonin into the circulation. Some medications can cause increased serotonin levels, especially antidepressants.
