Depends: The stone & urine composition would need to be evaluated to assess the possibility of medications to dissolve it. For example, small uric acid stones can be dissolved with hydration and medication to change the ph of the urine. A stone 2.7mm in its greatest dimension would have a reasonable chance of passing on its own as well without any medications.

Kidney stone: He should be able to pass that stone naturally, saying that, taking tamsulosin(flomax) may help hasten the passage. It may take time for him to pass it, stones usually have a life of their own and is hard to predict when they are going to pass. Intrevention may be required if the pain is too intense or for personal or financial reasons/work he can't wait.
