Family practice: An u/s is usually performed to assess pelvic organs to look for cystic lesions , enlargement , or other masses. It is not usually performed to assess for blocked tubes. Sometimes previous infections/std's may cause scaring. It is important to know if you are having difficulty getting pregnant.

Not typically normal: Fallopian tubes are typically patent unless they have been scarred for prior insults such as infections. The fallopian tubes are typically difficult to visualize on ultrasound. This is due to their tortous course and the surrounding bowels. If the tubes are obstructed and dilated they may be seen on ultrasound. An MRI or a hysterosalpingogram may be able to evaluate the fallopian tubes.
