Unsure.: Have you had a traumatic injury to the knee? Is there swelling? How long has it hurt? More info needed. This could be a sprain/strain or a damaged lateral ligament or meniscal injury. Try ice, elevation, and running with a neoprene brace. If it still bothers you see an orthopedist.

Runners knee: You need to be evaluated to be treated. I can't diagnose you in that little info. A common condition causing pain in the front of the knee is aptly called runners knee. Weak thigh muscles, pronated feet, poor alignment of the knee cap, altered leg mechanics can all lead to wearing and pain behind the knee cap.
