Poison ivy: The rhus antigen found on the surface of the poison ivy leaf in susceptible individuals causes a contact dermatitis. The rash only occurs where there is sufficient skin contact. The rash does not spread to un-contacted skin, but may occur more quickly in thinner skin or areas of larger amounts of contact. Contact dermatitis rash lasts 10-14 days. Your boyfriend could indeed have poison ivy.
