Inflammation: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses (in your head and face). It can be caused by infection or allergies, but usually a virus. Antibiotics don't have benefit for most people with sinusitis (they usually resolve on their own in 10-14 days). Things like neti pots, Ibuprofen and decongestants help with the symptoms. Antibiotics used improperly just cause yeast infections and resistant bugs.

I totally agree with the above for an acute sinusitis. If this problem persists or recurs then see your ENT doctor. A sinus opening problem, immune deficiency, allergy link, polyps or even a fungal infection could be the cause. Your ENT doctor will help if your problem is occurring more often. But if it’s new, please follow Dr Duchicela’s strong advice.

Common: Sinusitis... Bacterial infection of the sinuses affects about 34 million people a year. Conservative medical treatment handles the vast majority of cases. At times surgical procedures like endoscopic sinus surgery or newer balloon technologies are used to open diseased sinuses.

Yes: We usually classify sinusitis by duration (acute, sub-acute, or chronic) and location (which sinuses are involved). Some people have fungal sinsutis which has some differences in how we treat it.

PCP, ENT, Allergy: Your primary care doctor is a good place to start. They may need you to see an ENT or an allergist if you have any complications or issues related to your sinus infections.

Will an air purifier help with my sinusitis?

It may: If you have allergies due to pollen, dust, or airbone particles, then an air purifier may help. A hepa grade filter system is best and it should be cleaned regularly. Once the airborne allergies are controlled, your sinuses may become easier to manage.
