Too often: Decrease the frequency and duration of the ice pack application. Don't apply the ice pack directly to the skin. Use a light cloth as a barrier between the skin and ice pack.

normal response: The bluish discoloration is simply the response of your skin and the blood vessels in it to cold. You should not simply pack your hand in ice but actually massage it with an ice pack as this helps the local circulation but more importantly, reduces your risk of giving yourself a tissue injury such as frostbite. As long as the blue resolves when your hand warms up, everything is normal.
