Stops Fertilization: Both the Mirena (levonorgestrel) and paragard iuds keep sperm from fertilizing an egg. Paragard--a copper iud releases copper into the uterus; copper works as a spermicide. Mirena (levonorgestrel) thickens cervical mucous so sperm cannot enter; Mirena (levonorgestrel) may also block ovulation. Both iuds may create uterine inflammation which makes it harder for the egg to implant even if it did get fertilized.
