Not uncommon: Neonatal jaundice occurs in some newborns; usually resolves with time or more rapidly with light therapy. Tends to develop because of 2 factors - breakdown of fetal hemoglobin as it is replaced w/ adult hemoglobin & the relatively immature liver metabolic pathways that can't conjugate & excrete bilirubin as quickly as an adult. Discuss with pediatrician for more reassurance.
