Water Retention: Retaining water is often really retaining sodium. Classic sign is edema or lower extremity swelling and or weight gain.

Retaining water: The most accurate way to check is just to measure you weight daily. If you have a good baseline weight, then any significant fluctuation (ie. More than 1/2 pound a day) is water accumulation.
