Sleep Health: One major problem is the general attempt to mask serious underlying sleep disorders with sleep medications. Anyone suffering brain cell damage should be carefully screened and tested for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that from repeated cessation of breathing can produce dangerously low blood oxygen levels. Find a board certified sleep specialist to evaluate your mom's condition.

Ask your doctor: Your mom is probably elderly; atrophy is a normal aging process and does not mean your mom is losing her brain function. I don't know what your doctor means otherwise when he/she says cells are damaged, as MRI does not show individual cells. Sleeping pills can interfere with sleep quality and can cause other issues. I suggest you go with her to doctor to ask your questions.
