My 7mo old gets the hiccups after she laughs really hard every time. is this normal? what causes it? can it be prevented?

Normal: It is pretty common for newborns to hiccup easily. They have still a very immature nervous system and their diaphragm is still getting the hang of tricky things such as breathing and laughing, and can get irritated causing the hiccups until more mature. Enjoy the cuteness- this too will pass.

Haven,t seen it,but : I can see how it might happen. The hiccup is thought to originate when a mild nerve stimulus creates a pattern of repeat contractions in the diaphragm muscle. The stimulus is thought to travel through the diaphragm in a circle until it stops. The laughing bears some similarities to a hiccup in the way the diaphragm moves during both. The process will likely fade with age.
