Ask your doctor: Head ct without contrast is the most common way to image the brain. It is the best test for bleeding in the brain and other trauma. You are right though, it is not very good for finding small extraaxial brain tumors. Anything big enough to press on the brainstem or cause a shift of brain tissue though should be visible. Many tumors also cause edema which should be visible on most scans.
