A member asked:

Oxycontin is a commonly abused drug. it is basically controlled-released oxycodone. why do abusers use oxycontin instead of oxycodone?

Controlled release: Medications like Oxycontin contain a much higher dose of pain medication than oxycodone, which is designed to be slowly delivered over time. However, when someone does something to the Oxycontin to disrupt the controlled release, they get the whole dose all at once. This has proved fatal on more than one occasion, and very, very not smart.
