4-6 weeks: It depends on how big the hernia was, how big the mesh is, and if the hernia repair was done open or laparoscopically (with tiny incisions and a video camera). Lifting heavy things too soon will cause the hernia to recur. So, generally, the surgeon will probably recommend that heavy lifting be put off for 4-6 weeks after the hernia repair.
