Nerve compression: http://www.handctr.com/carpal-tunnel-syndrome-q-a.html median nerve compression at the wrist gives numbness in the blue area and loss of muscle function in the large muscle of the thumb. Other things may affect other nerves in the hand as well as referred symptoms form a more proximal site.

Pinched nerve: Pins and needles are paresthesias. The nerve or nerves are not getting enough blood flow. Without more info like how long this has been going on, which parts of your hand/fingers are effected, is there any difference between day and night, how is your health otherwise i can't give you a better answer/.
