Safe and effective: In essence there are two ways to given radiation to prostate: external beam irradiation and brachytherapy (implants). They can be given separately or in combination. The decision depends on patient's condition, aggressiveness of cancer and the risk of cancer spread. There is now long term data to show that radiation is as effective as surgery in selected patients.

Prostate cancer: There is no treatment for prostate cancer that doesn't have some side effects or risk of complications. Both surgery and radiation are considered by most to be equally effective, but each has a different profile of side effects and possible complications. One should consult both a urologist and a radiation oncologist before deciding. Observation alone may be appropriate for some low risk tumors.
