An acronym.: Many acronyms exist, but pad often refers to peripheral artery disease. This is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms and legs. Symptoms include leg pain when walking (intermittent claudication). It is usually cause by accumulation of fat deposits in the arteries (atherosclerosis) and smoking, and is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

Peripheral Artery Ds: Pad refers to "peripheral arterial disease". It is a catch all term and not very specific. Most people with pad have atherosclerosis (commonly known as hardening of the arteries) which leads to build up of plaque in the arteries and blockages that impair the circulation of their legs; however, there are other causes.
