A 45-year-old member asked:

i have a pain below my right shoulder blade and it increases when taking a deep breath, do you have any idea what's wrong?

Likely muscular: Try taking some tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain. If there's accompanying fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, you may need more work up including a chest xray, ekg. I'd recommend blood work too because of your age. Take care!

Nerve issues: Numbness over the shoulder blade, about a silver dollar size can be seen in "notalgia paresthetica", but your problem could be a focal intercostal neuropathy, or even a referred issue from a thoracic disc. A neurological exam can assist diagnosis, and meds exist to control the symptoms.

More info?: Other than pain, any swallowing problems ? How long does it last? Anything make it better? Anything make it worse? Does food affect the pain? Have you had any surgery ? How long has it been there? Have you tried any medications? Did they work? Any nausea? Fevers? If this is recent you could try ibuprofen, heat, massage. If long standing or worsening see a doctor to begin workup.

Many possibilities: The differential is long but here are a few of the more common considerations: referred pain from the cervical spine (particularly C5 which supplies some of the muscles of the scapula), intrinsic shoulder pathology (impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tears...), brachial neuritis (parsonage turner syndrome) and entrapment neuropathies (dorsal scapular nerve). Please meet with your doc. Good luck.

Yes: It may put stress on the muscles supporting the shoulder blade. These muscles are important for posture and shoulder function.

Need to see your PCP: To start evaluating you and then onward referral to an orthopod. Meanwhile take some aleve (naproxen) or Ibuprofen (if no allergies/side effects), and apply ice/heat packs. Good luck ; happy holidays.
