Depends how earlier: Inflammation by definition implies that there is an active injury and healing process occurring. Spinal cord lesions can result from car accidents, but usually this occurs in the context of a severe injury in which the cord has been compressed. Later, the injury in the cord can appear on mri. Contrast given with the MRI can help determine whether the inflammation is active.
