Probable thyroid: Directly under the adam's apple is the cricoid cartilage which can be felt as a firm lump. However there is also an extension of the thyroid, the pyramidal lobe, in which nodules can form. As both will move up and down with swallowing it can be hard to tell them apart. Suggest you see md.

Silent Reflux: Laryngopharyngeal reflux. One of the most common causes of swelling in this area is acid reflux coming up from the stomach and burning the posterior larynx. The acid reflux effectively causes an acid burn of the throat tissues resulting in swelling that feels like a golf ball is stuck in the throat.
