Probably unnecessary: Heavy periods are very normal for young women. A visit to the gynecologist to discuss strategies of control your blood flow would be best. If you feel like you are about to pass out from loss of blood, then you need to go to the hospital.

Possibly: If your bleeding is soaking through heavy pads/tampons every hour or so, and/or blood is running down your legs, that's a good reason to run to hospital. If you're feeling light headed or faint, or if your family says you look pale, that's another reason to go. Either way, there are good treatments for your problem, and you'll want to see a gynecologist soon.
