A member asked:

I have a total cholesterol of 223 but my specific #s are ie, ldl = 118. hdl= 82 and triglcerides = 117. how do i interpret this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

High HDL Cholesterol: High HDL cholesterol predicts improved outcomes for populations of patients, less heart attacks and strokes. However, for individuals, this predictive value is less robust. Some people believe that very high HDL cholesterol may loose it's protective function (dysfunctional hdl). There are no commercially available tests for this . Bottom line is numbers are one part of the equation only.
