Consistency : Make healthy decisions: low sodium diet, exercise, no tobacco, and be consistent. Take prescribed medications, control blood pressure, avoid all nsaids, if diabetic manage it well, and like everyone it helps to have a little bit of good luck too. Find a doctor who will look for ways to slow/prevent loss of kidney function. Most people born with one kidney never need dialysis.

Solitary Kidney: Your husband should see a nephrologist to have the function of his kidney assessed with a 24 hour urine collection to asses the kidney's function. He will also need to have some blood tests taken. It seems as if he was born with one kidney and he can live many years with it without problems, in the absence of diseases that attack the kidney such as diabetes and hbp.
