Timing: Many doctors recommend going to the hospital when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, and last about a minute. Even then it is a good idea to check with your hospital to discuss your case. They will discuss timing of contractions, whether your water has broken, and if you have a bloody show. Calling to early is not a problem, as the hospital can help you through this period.

Talk to your doc: You should talk to your doctor or midwife about her plan for you before you start labor. They can explain when its best to come in to the hospital for labor. Anesthesiologists typically don't place epidurals in patients until they are contracting and dilating already for normal vaginal deliveries. I hope it all goes well for you and your baby.
