What is causing my child's gas?

Most gas...: Most gas is swallowed air. If it isn't burped out during the feeding, it passes a valve (pylorus) between stomach and duodenum, and from there on it's one way street down to the bottom. Some gas is produced by bacteria in the bowel from undigested food, and when this happens it's a sign of improper digestion of whatever food caused it (milk, beans and cabbage are common culprits).

Swallowed air : Many parents neglect to associate smacking while feeding or taking the nipple as a very common source of "gas". Repositioning the nipple or increasing the flow of milk can help alleviate this cause of gas. Milk or lactose intolerance must also be considered. However the presence of gas-forming bacteria in the intestines may also be the cause. Adding a daily probiotic often corrects this problem.
