The are many: Possible causes of numbness including and not limited to systemic disease like diabetes. Local nerve entrapments, back problems. Side effects of medications or chemotherapy. You mention he is a farmer so in the back of my mind if any of the above fail to be the cause, i would next look into any possible chemical exposure used in farming.
