Nerve or not a nerve: What do you mean by a stress reaction? If you are thinking about neuropathy, stop. Symptoms in two toes, on one side? is not a sign of neuropathy. Perhaps you just irritated something by trauma. That's common, and not serious. There are ways to determine hereditary neuropathy, but for you, there is no need to do so.

Multiple causes: Numbness & tingling in the toes has multiple causes. In your case given your age & stress reaction,if your MD gave you a boot, they think you probably have a stress fracture. The altered kinetics are probably causing your numbness or the boot itself. An EMG will help you get the diagnosis. The same is true for your father &grandmother. Most causes of neuropathy can be determined w/a Neuro eval & EMG.
