Prilosec OTC: You can try Prilosec otc. Also consider pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). If otc is not helping, you should really consider seeing your doctor for further discussion.

Is it really GERD?: Yes, Prilosec otc is stronger but gerd can be due to diseases that impair esophageal function, cause inadequate saliva, gastric outlet narrowing, gastroparesis, small bowel pathology, etc. Damage from inadequate treatment may result in esophageal ulcers, scarring, narrowing, pre-cancer (barretts). Gerd is also mimicked by heart, lung, gallbladder, pancreas, & neurologic disease. At 56 get checked.
