Clinical examination: Neonatologists can determine approximate weeks of gestation although ultrasound in first 2 trimesters most accurate.Birth weight of less than 2, 500 grams (5 pounds, 8 ounces). Lacking normal baby fat, finger nail development, and muscle tone. Extra body hair, reduced chest circumference, body length, poor suck and swallow are other signs. Exam of eyes can help.Imaging of brain and skeleton also.
