Imaging: There are many reasons for this, i'd start with imaging. True hip joint pain usually refers to the groin. There are many locations that patients consider "hip" pain, but the origin is somewhere else that would make us think another source might be causing your pain.

Hip bursitis: Could be inflammation of the hip where the it band slides over the outside of your hip bone. Hurts to walk lay on, pinpoint pain lateral hip. Try stretching exercises. Hugging your leg to your chest also figure four your leg on your knee and grab behind thigh of other leg and pull while laying down. Nsaids and ice.
