Yes it could: Tmj stands for temporomanidibular joint. A muscle spasm would not be in the joint technically. It could though cause the joint to not act normally, such as not letting your teeth close normally or produce tension on the muscles and ligaments that control the function of the joint. Permanent damage could occur to the teeth and the joint apparatus. Try physical therapy or Botox injections.

Consultation needed: The short answer is yes. The long answer is to consult with a dentist who has extensive training and experience in tmj\tmd diagnosis and treatment for an evaluation. Often these problems are simple to treat\prevent or temporary in nature related to stresses in life. Only with a one on one personal history and exam can one determine what is best for you.

Yes: The muscles around the TMJ can cause long term problems if chronically in spasm. See TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
