Varies: Some occur without any known risk factor or reason. Others are caused by malfunctioning fallopian tubes. This can be caused by infections like chlamydia or gynecologic problems like endometriosis. What is certain is that having one ectopic increases the chances of it happening again. Being on birth control to prevent this life threatening issue is important.
