Most commonly.....: A white coating of the tongue suggests chronic or recurrent yeast infections. This could happen from recent courses of antibiotics, change in diet, or decrease of the immune system. You should definitely see an ENT doctor, who may do a culture, and put you on either a medical mouthwash and/or an oral medication.

Mostly normal: Most of the time it's the result of tissue turnover and a film of microorganism that live in the oral cavity. It also could be a fungal infection. Brush your tongue from back to front. If the you have any pain, or the film doors not resolve in a couple of days, consult your dentist or physician.
