Trigger point: This is a commonly heard complaint which correlated with thge attachment of the erector spinae muscle group and is likely referred from deep within (posterior primary rami, nerve roots, facet joints etc. It has a benign significance.

MRI: I would suggest an MRI targeting the area of pain. Had someone similar recently with very similar symptoms and multiple imaging studies. Finally MRI showed a muscle tear where the oblique muscles insert onto the iliac crest.

Back exam: Pain above the iliac crest is not likely to be coming from the hip. It is more likely to be radiating from the lumbar spine. A low back evaluation is indicated.
