Swallowing: The act of swallowing contracts the muscles in your eustachian tube, which is how you equalize pressure in your ears. Doing this while your ears progressively plug up while flying helps prevent it. The other is to pinch your nose and swallow, which will also not only open your eustachian tube but give positive pressure of air into your middle ear.
