Costochondritis: Very few common causes of pain in this area starting at rest. Most likely is inflammation of the cartilage that attaches ribs to sternum, costocondritis or tietze's syndrome. Can last days or months. Usually resolves with no treatment. Anti-inflammatory meds may help but take with caution or with your physician's approval.
