Several things: Water retention is diagnosed with the presence of a number of different findings, including things on your physical exam (sudden increase in weight, edema of extremites/face, crackles in your lungs) and laboratory findings which may vary depending on the reason why you are retaining fluids. You have to put together all the puzzle pieces to ge the correct picture and final answer of am i retaining.
