A member asked:

My father had fractured bones in his neck he has been on bed rest for 2 weeks in hospital with a metal neck brace, he is 82 years. what are the progno?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Guarded : Prolonged bed rest especially in an elderly person increases the risk of blood clots in the legs, which can then travel to the lungs causing what is called pulmonary embolism. Also bed rest increases the risk of pneumonia, which can be fatal in an elderly patient. Of course, the prognosis depends on many things, including any co-existing conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes.
