See Dermatologist: Linear epidermal nevi are present at birth or become apparent soon after birth and as such are considered one of many different types of benign birth marks. The one difference is that epidermal nevi commonly undergo changes at or around puberty. These changes consist of linear enlargement along with thickening. Some smaller lesions can be removed surgically.
