Difficult to answer: This is called the french connection related to the observation that french folks who drink red wine have a slight decrease in heart disease. This needs to be taken in the context of weight (wine is grapes and sugar), diabetes and exercise. The general thinking is that while it may be minimally good, daily wine for the medical value is not a good thing. Judicious wine in moderation is ok.

Wine.: Wine in amounts up to one glass daily, especially red wine, has been shown to have heart benefits. The resveritrol found in red wine is particularly beneficial. However, more than 2.5 glasses/day for a man or 1.5 glasses/day for a woman can lead to cirrhosis. So enjoy, but be careful.

Alcohol: 49 year old gentleman with a question/red wine. Certain studies have popularized the belief that resveretol in wine is the way to improve one's cholesterol and protect one's heart. I believe personally that this is enabling behavior. Eating a healthy diet is a better way to do this. Alcohol is a social lubricant our society gathers around with decreased judgement, impaired reflexes, inhibitions.
