Focal lesion: Focal epilepsies are caused by localized lesions. These can represent congenital nests of abnormal tissue, which may be very difficult to visualize on imaging studies, but looks like eeg confirmed location. Some pts have intrauterine issues during gestation, and others may experience minor trauma during labor and delivery. Do not worry, treatment is usually highly successful.

Unknown : Since an eeg has been performed, its assumed that an MRI has also been performed and it too is normal. If not family history is present and no cause identified, it can be cryptogenic or idiopathic. That means we either don't know. Specialized imaging studies and genetic testing can be performed but not readily available and cost is a limiting factor. Good luck. Good thing is there is treatment.
