DIET: Dieting is the best first step. Vegetarian and mediterranean diets prolong life. If lipids are still abnormal, your doctor might start therapy with a statin drug. If a statin is not tolerated, the dose and frequency of dose can be lowered, and you can be started on coq10. For persons intolerant to statins, binding resins can be tried.

It depends!: It depends on what part of your cholesterol panel is a problem. If triglycerides are elevated, then diet and exercise are vital. If the LDL (bad) cholesterol is high, diet can make some difference, but often meds are needed. If the HDL (good) cholesterol is low, then it is very hard to raise. Talk to a lipid specialist in your area. www.lipid.org can help you find one.
