Not likely: May be getting spasm at the bottom of the stomach where it exists into the intestine, trapping gas and stomach contents. Helps to eat slowly, chew food well to avoid swallowing air. Antacid/gas combinations. Avoid caffeine, large meals, eating late, bending over with full stomach, alcohol. Smaller meals. Help. See doctor if daily otc acid meds like prilosec, Prevacid (lansoprazole) or zegerid don't help.

Hiatal hernia: It very well may be. It depends on the size and orientation of the stomach. You may need a barium esophagram and consultation with a surgeon.

Yes: The lower esophagus has a sphincter, a muscle like the anus, that should tighten ; but in hiatal hernia doesn't.Eat slower, exhale before swallowing and avoid beer with meals.

Yes: A medium sized hiatal hernia that is this symptomatic will probably require surgical repair at some point. A paraesophageal type hiatal hernia caues stomach twisting in the chest, similar to a balloon twisting, blocking the air passage from one side to the other. Diagnosis w/ upper gi.. See a general or thoracic surgeon with experience in laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair for consultation.
