Tendinitis: Is it on one side or the other, or on the back? Any previous injuries? Many tendons wrap the ankle in those areas, and can become inflamed with overuse or injury. If the pain is worse when moving the ankle in certain directions, it is most likely tendinitis. Rest, ice, compression, elevation (rice) therapy would be a good start. If things do not improve, you should see a specialist.

See a podiatrist: Could be a tendonitis or tarsal tunnel syndrome.
